Lower Thames Crossing Finally Gets Green Light - and a £590m Boost

After years of back-and-forth, the huge Lower Thames Crossing project has finally been approved. If you haven't heard of it, it's a new tunnel that will run under the River Thames between Kent and Essex, designed to reduce traffic on the often-jammed Dartford Crossing.

This new route is expected to be the longest road tunnel in the UK, and once it's built, it should make a big difference for drivers, freight, and businesses in the area. Construction is due to begin in 2026, with the entire project expected to take about six years to complete.

So far, the Government has already spent £800m preparing for the project and just added another £590m to help get it moving. They're also looking for private companies to invest and help fund the rest.

With this tunnel in place, traffic could move more smoothly across the Thames, saving time and reducing pollution. It's a massive project, but one that promises to bring big benefits to the South-East of England.
