Liverpool Street Station Redevelopment Approved

Planning permission has been granted by the City of London Corporation for a major redevelopment of Liverpool Street Station, Britain's busiest railway hub. The decision clears the way for a £1.2 billion transformation that will increase passenger capacity, modernise facilities, and future-proof the station for decades of growing demand.

The project will see significant improvements including a much larger concourse, new lifts and escalators, step-free access to all platforms, enhanced ticketing areas, and better circulation routes for pedestrians, cyclists, and bus links. A new commercial building above the station will help fund the infrastructure works, bringing shops, offices, and public spaces into the heart of the development.

While widely supported as essential for handling forecast increases in passenger numbers, the plans have drawn criticism from heritage groups concerned about the impact on historic parts of the Victorian station. Nonetheless, Network Rail and partner stakeholders say this is a crucial step in ensuring the station can serve up to 158 million passengers annually in the future.
