Energy company Centrica has announced a partnership with US firm X-energy to build advanced modular nuclear reactors in the UK. The £10 billion project will see twelve 80-megawatt reactors developed at Hartlepool.
These smaller nuclear plants are seen as a way to deliver reliable, zero-carbon power more quickly than traditional large nuclear stations. Once running, they could supply enough electricity to power around 1.5 million homes.
Supporters say the move will help the UK reach its climate targets whilst strengthening energy security. If successful, it could pave the way for more modular nuclear projects in the future.
